Lesson Preview!!!

This week we will look at chapters 4 - 6 of 1 Corinthians.  In these verses Paul addresses two main topics; encouraging church leaders and reasons to practice morality.

While I continue to put this lesson together - I am thinking of Sunday and seeing you in class.  Hope you week went well and that you have fun at the fall festival today.  Don't have too many root beer floats!

Peace in Christ,

Weekly Recap!!!

Lesson Recap

This week we started to get into the book of 1 Corinthians.  In the over all view of the book we learned that Corinth was a major hub, and that it was located on an isthmus that made it a very important area for commerce.  It enjoyed great prosperity.  Since the city was very cosmopolitan it was subject to any number of vices.  In addition, the city was rampant with the worship of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love.  Paul spent 18 months in Corinth, during which time he established the church there.  His first letter was penned in response to unfavorable reports that he had gotten about the church in Corinth.

We looked at church unity, and what it is.  We also looked at how do you know when a church has unity, and what destroys it.
This lesson was broken down into the following sections:

1:1-9 Typical Greek letter introduction
1:10-17 Lack of unity in the church
1:18-31 Solution to the problem

Remember that this is a letter that was originally not given chapters and verses, and should be read the same way you read a letter today.
From the greeting (1:1-9) we learn that the author is Paul, and that someone named Sosthenes (Acts 18: 14-17) is with him.  We also see that Paul intended the letter to be passed to other churches. Paul also mentions spiritual gifts in verse 7, which is setting the table for something he will cover later. In verse 9 we see two things.  First that God is faithful.  Second, we see why even Peter has some difficulty interpreting what Paul sometimes means!

In chapter 1: 10-17 Paul addresses the lack of unity in the church.  The church was in it's infant state at that time.  In that time, it was common for travelers to come through sharing their understanding of a philosophy or religion.  It was no different for Christians.  New believers were coming from all over, which meant that there was an array of theology going on all the time.  This was the problem with the church in Corinth.Paul founded the church in Corinth, so his theology would have been dominant.  When others came through preaching their understanding of the faith based on the preaching of Peter or Apollos we can see where conflict would occur. In verse 10, Paul urges them in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Why would he do that?  Because in ancient times names were not just a label, but an expression of a persons nature and character.  So in using Jesus' name Paul was reminding the Corinthians of the Lord that they followed, as well as his message and purpose.  Focusing on Christ and His purpose helps take the focus off of individual preferences and desires.  Uniformity in the church is impossible, but unity is very possible.  What is the difference?  How do you think you would respond if faced with a contentious church member?  How would you try to promote unity?  What role do you think members play in promoting unity?

In chapter 1: 18-31 we see Paul's solution!  We know that the Greeks were fond of philosophy, or love of wisdom.  What is it about the Christian message that the Greeks would have considered foolish?  Jews, on the other hand, demanded signs.  Throughout the Old Testament God provided many signs so people would believe His messenger.  What was it about the Christian message that failed to satisfy the Jews demand for signs?  The answers to both questions are found in the crucifixion.  Christ crucified was a problem for the Jews because they were looking for a conquering Messiah and not a crucified one.  To the Greeks, the crucifixion of Christ was illogical and hopelessly weak.  So the only was for Jew or Greek to come to faith was through faith...no work or self merit.  So ho do strong convictions about the Gospels truth help promote church unity?  It reminds us of our own lack of wisdom and strength, everyone is equal at the foot of the cross,  and it helps us keep the main thing the main thing!

In chapter 1: 26-31 we see how focusing on God's work can help promote church unity.  Why do you think that some church members elevate themselves over others?

Happy Birthday...

SPOTmail Update!

Lesson Prep

Did you feel like you were back in school last Sunday?  You know how it goes - the regular teacher is out so the sub slides in the tape and presses the play button.  Hope you found the information on Paul insightful.

This week we will have a live presentation as I plan to be with you.  The lesson plan will consist of the following three segments: the man - the city - the letters.  I think it is most beneficial to understand the background in order to glean the richness of the recorded material.

I am creating a handout you will want to hang on to for the duration of our study of 1 & 2 Corinthians.  Final question - what ever happened to the third  Corinthian book?

Look forward to seeing you Sunday,
Don

Prayer Request
Ryan Perry has been dealing with health issues - almost continuous gagging and choking.  At the same time, the Perry's dog had surgery and has to be watched closely on a continuous basis.  Pray not only for Ryan and Shylo's recover, but also that Zenobia can get some sleep.
Ryan's Rappers (from Zenobia Perry)

Dear SPOT class friends,

On Saturday, October 9th at 10a.m. I will be leading a team in the annual Walk Now For Autism Speaks in St. Louis.  Our group will meet at 9:30a at the ticket booth for a picture on the Upper Muny Parking lot in  Forest Park.  Known as Ryan's Rapper’s will be walking  for the 8th year!

Last year, St. Louis again hit the million dollar mark, collecting $1,045,564 with over 20K walkers!  Our team collected $16,171 still placing our team in the top 10 with approximately 65 walkers on our team.  Ready for this?  Ryan’s Rappers has collected $108,871 over the past 7 years!!!

I'm working on an updated video from past walks, and pictures from the 2009 walk.  Our team photo from the 2009 walk is attached along with a recent picture of Ryan and Jaclyn.

Your donations are definitely making a difference.  Some of you may be receiving updates on the research that is being conducted throughout the year.  For more information on recent scientific studies and funding initiatives, visit http://www.autismspeaks.org/science/index.php
With your help, new autism genes are being discovered!  We are steps closer to finding the cause and cure that is affecting 1 out of every 110 children (or was recently reported, 1 in 70 boys).

Ryan is now 17, and a senior in high school.  He probably, however, will stay in school until he is 21 to help him continue to learn how to be more independent.  His team of teachers, aides and home tutors are exceptional again this year.  He currently is enrolled in classes with a special education teacher and mainstreamed in ceramics and a PE mentoring class where peers choose to assist students with special abilities.  Twice a week, Ryan and his classmates work at a nearby retirement facility where for 2 hours his duties may include cleaning light fixtures, tables, handrails, helping with laundry, and setting the table.

This past summer, Ryan was accepted into SWEP (Summer Work Experience Program) where he worked in the dining room at a retirement home and unpacked new merchandise at TJMaxx.  And he got paid!  He was supposed to work 20 hours/week, but we tapered the hours to what he was able to tolerate.  Something about setting the dining room table 3 times/day just did not sit well with him :)  When not at school, Ryan plays T-ball on a team with other children with special needs, takes horseback riding lessons, and continues to swim regularly.

We want you to know that any amount of donation means a lot to us - $5, $10, $100, $1000.  We are so thankful for all the support that you have shared with our family.  We could not do it without you.

Lesson Preview
Hope this note finds all well.  Seems so long since we last met.  The big event that has happened since our class last met is that "summer has officially ended."  Well, functionally summer is over, anyway.  How do we know that?  Because the summer series, Adult-Rated Bible Stories, has come to an end.  So, what's next?

For the next few months, we will study the letters Paul wrote to the church in Corinth.  But first, we are going to take a look at Paul, the man, who wrote the letters to the Corinthians and, of course, many others.  He was a remarkable person.

Just think how different the New Testament would look without his contributions.  It would be a short read, to say the least.

Lori and I will be away this Sunday.  But like your teens' class, when the teacher is away, a substitute is on call.  So it will be this Sunday, but we hope you won't be one of the mice playing
-- hookey.

Brooks will be introducing you to a very comprehensive video on the life of Paul.  Since the Bible is the same now and always, it should be of little consequence that this video is on VHS -- perhaps our kids still remember what they are.  This profile on Paul will be a great tee-up to our series on some of his most important letters.

Have a good class meeting and I'll look forward to seeing you again on September 19!

The Mid-Week Update

Lesson Recap

This week's study was on Daniel.  We learned in our last study of Elijah that the nation of Israel had been divided into two separate kingdoms after Solomon died..the northern kingdom of Israel, and the southern kingdom of Judah.  When we take up this lesson, Israel had been defeated and many of it's people were now prisoners, which God allowed due to their disobedience. Today we looked at Judah, about 50 years after Elijah.

Where to Draw the Line: Daniel 1:1-17- When Daniel was a boy the king of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar invaded Judah.  Daniel lived in Jerusalem, Judah's capital.  The city and Solomon's temple were destroyed.  Many of the nobility and their children were taken to Babylon, including Daniel.  Daniel and some other children were to go through training to serve in Nebachadnezzar's palace.  Daniel knew that according to God's law he was limited on what he was allowed to eat.  He made a deal with an official.  He asked if he and his friends could only eat allowed foods for 10 days and them compare them to the other boys. The official said yes.  After 10 days Daniel and his friends were noticeably better looking.  Knowing that Daniel was in his mid teens, what does this tell you about Daniel?  About his parents?

Neck on the Line: Daniel 2:1-49-  King Nebachchadnezzar had a dream that troubled him.  None of his wise men could interpret it.  In his anger, the king ordered them killed.  Daniel heard of this and asked to see the king.  He asked the king to give him some time to grant his wish.  Daniel prayed and asked God to reveal the dream so that all would know the true God.  That night God answered Daniel's prayer in a dream.  The next day Daniel told the king, and he was amazed.  The king dropped down and paid Daniel honor and praised his God as the "God of gods and Lord of Kings".  Daniel was then place in a high position over the entire province of Babylon, and over all it's wise men.  What do you thing prompted Daniel to put his neck on the line?  What are some things our teens would put their necks on the line for?

Handwriting on the Wall: Daniel 5:1-30- Time has passed, and the king has died.  His son Balshazzar in now king.  He decides to celebrate with 1000 of his highest officials, and get a little smashed.  He decides to bring out the cups that his dad had taken from the temple in Jerusalem.  They all drank from them and praised their gods.  This ticked God off.  A human-like hand appeared on the wall of the palace and began writing symbols.  He got very scared.  He called in all of his wise men to read the writing, and none could.  This caused the king to get even more frightened.  His wife reminded him of Daniel and all he did for his father.  Daniel was brought in and told he would be greatly rewarded if he could interpret the writing.  Daniel reminded Balshazzar that his father had recognized that God was the one and only true god, and that Balshazzar should have known this and not disgraced God by using the cups from the temple.  After that Daniel read the writing that basically said the Balshazzar had been judged and was going to die.  Darius, king of the Medes invaded Babylon, and killed Balshazzar that very night.  Can you think of anything God considers holy that we should handle with care?

It's the Pits: Daniel 6:1-28-  Darius reorganized the kingdom.  He divided the kingdom into thirds.  Daniel, about 65, was given one of those given a section to be responsible for.  There was a guy who was a jerk, and he wanted to get rid of Daniel.  He comes up with a plan to trick the king.  He goes to Darius and tells him to come up with a decree that no one should pray to anyone other that Darius.  (The jerk knew that Daniel only prayed to God, and in public view!)  Daniel did not obey this law and get caught by...guess who?  Daniel is brought before Darius, where he sees that he's been had.  There is no way out of this new law..even the king.  So Daniel was sent to spend the night in a pit of hungry lions.  The next morning the king rushes out to see what is left of Daniel, and to see if Daniel's God has saved him.  He had!  Then Darius threw in the men who had tricked him and their families into the same pit.  The lions feasted on them.  Darius then issued a decree praising and showing reverence to the God of Daniel.  Do you think Daniel should have obeyed the new law?  Is it OK for our teens to ever not obey us?  How do we teach our kids to deal with jerks?

No Class

There is no class this upcoming Labor Day Weekend.  There is only one worship service at 10:30.

The Mid-Week Update

Sorry for the slight delay in getting this up!!

Lesson Recap

This weeks study was on Elijah, and was titled "Purpose Driven".  Solomon is dead and Israel is divided with Judah to the south and Israel to the north.  Elijah arrives a bit less than 100 years after Solomon died, and he is a prophet to Israel.  Elijah comes from a very harsh region...not quite the same as the luxurious lifestyle he will find in central Canaan where God has sent him.  Elijah was know more for his deeds, not his words.  His story can be found in 1 Kings 17-19 and 2 Kings 1,2.

God's main issue with Israel is their worship of foreign gods, including Baal (who was the god of fertility and water).  Elijah informed king Ahab that rain would not come for a given time unless Elijah himself asked for it.  This showed that God was greater than Baal.  It then stopped raining.  A while later there was a widow living in Zarephath that God wanted Elijah to live with.  He found the woman gathering sticks to fix her and her sons last meal.  Elijah asked for, and was refused, bread.  Elijah instructed her to feed him first, and if she did she would never run out of flour or oil until God sent rain. What would you have done in this situation?  If you said you would feed the prophet than what things has God asked of you that required less faith...and how did you respond?

A problem cropped up...the woman's son got sick and died.  The woman couldn't understand why God would provide for them and then strike down her son.  Elijah took the boy upstairs where he asked God to restore the boy's life...and he did!  What do you think this did for the woman's faith?  How about the boy?  Do you think they were silent about this..or did they spread the word?

Sometime later, Elijah (at God's request) met with King Ahab.  Elijah tells him to assemble the people and prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel.  Here he issues a challenge to them.  Both sides were to build an altar, put a sacrifice of meat on it, and pray to their god to consume the meat with fire.  The prophets of Baal went first.  No matter what they tried, they had no luck.  Elijah even made joke about their god having to step out to the restroom, and that was why he wasn't available!  Elijah called time, and took his turn.  He prayed something like "God in order to prove to everyone that you are the only true God, come and consume this sacrifice.  Right after the "Amen" God sent down fire from heaven that consumed not only the sacrifice, but water that had been poured on it...and even the altar.  The prophets of Baal saw this and took off.  Elijah told the people that these prophets should all be killed, ant it was so.  Why do we sometimes doubt that God will answer our prayer?  Do you think He loved Elijah more than he loves you?  Do you think Elijah had more power than you?

Elijah performed many miracles.  By the end of his life he had a servant named Elisha that Go was preparing to take Elijah's place.  Elisha saw many of Elijah's miracles.  In 2 Kings 2:11 we learn that "As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them,  and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind."  Elijah saw the importance of mentoring-passing on the faith.  Even Paul tells us to mentor.  How is our role as parent similar to that of being a mentor?  How can we see that Elijah was "Purpose "Driven?  What does it mean for the parent of a teen to be purpose driven?

Weekly Recap!!!

Lesson Recap

On Sunday we studied Gideon. In a time where quite a few of the people of the generation after Joshua worshiped other Gods. This did not sit too well with the Lord.  You can read about his displeasure in Judges 2:20-21.  In fact, god said he was going to punish his people.  God did have mercy, however, as he raised up judges who saved them from the hands of raiders.

During the time of the Judges, there existed a cycle that consisted of the Israelites disobeying God, God using the people in the land to punish them, then they would cry out for mercy, and God would raise up a Judge to save them.  This continued over and over again.  Then along comes Gideon.  He is one of those Judges.  Another everyday person used by God.  Gideon's story is found in Judges 6-8.

Gideon sees himself as not worthy for this task. At this time, the Midianintes are picking on Israel.  Gideon even goes so far as to thresh his grain in the valley instead of a hill, where it should be done!  God comes to him and calls him a "mighty warrior".Gideon even tried to convince God that he is not this might warrior.

An attacking force is headed toward Gideon and his people. God comes to Gideon and tells him to prepare for battle.  Gideon has seen God do some pretty amazing stuff...like making fire come out of a rock.  Even so, Gideon need a sign.  On two different occasions Gideon hangs up a fleece and uses this to test God and what he is saying.  After this, Gideon is convinced that God wants him to call theor forces together to get ready to fight.

The forces attacking Gideon numbered 135,000.  Gideon had 32,000. God needed to have that army much smaller so the Israelites could boast about how they took their foe!God told Gideon to keep trimming his army until he had just 300 soldiers.

God told the Israelites to have the groups to start blowing horns and breaking pots that contained fire.  Then the hoard began turning on each other with their swords, and Gidoen and his men chased them and routed them.
