SPOTmail Update!!!!

On February 7, we concluded our study of the "parable section" in the book of Mark. The section consisted of four parables. This week we will study a unit on "miracles." (Who knew Mark was this organized?)

Guess how many miracles are included in this unit? I can already hear you saying . . ."The real miracle will be Don covering it all in one week." I accept the challenge!

In preparation for Sunday, you will want to read Mark 4:35 - 6:6a. I think we all will be surprised at some of the insights coming out of these divine acts of Jesus. If you really want to be ready for Sunday, consider the relationship between fear and faith as you read the miracles.

Hey parents, have you taken the opportunity to go play in the snow with your teen(s)? How about challenging them to a Kids vs. Parents snow "fight"? (Is this a way to legally beat up on your kids?)

I'll want to hear all about it Sunday.

In Christ,
Don

SPOTlunch

The kids will still be off at Big Chill on Sunday afternoon, February 21, so it sounds like a great opportunity for a SPOTlunch. We'll have our drawing this Sunday to see where in the world we're going this time!

Sunday Update!!!

Lesson Recap

Today we continued looking at the parables in Mark 4. We looked at the parable of the lamp in verses 21-23, which is a parable about hiddenness. When you consider the fact that we cannot "see" without the light that is Jesus, this parable really makes sense. We must make Jesus visible and know to all!

We also considered the parable of the measures and the way people respond to the light Jesus tells us about. Rememeber...the rich become richer, and the poor become poorer!

In vesus 26-29 we saw the parable of the seed cast upon the earth....or is it the soil again? We saw tht the sower had no control over the seed after it is in the soil. At this point the seed becomes God's work as the Holy Spirit takes over.

Consider this: the only reason the parables were explained to the disciples is because they asked! Pray that we "ask" God for his explanation every time we study His word!

Super Bowl Party

The SPOT Super Bowl party was a smash success (unless you were rooting for the Colts...sorry, Don and Phil!). Everyone present had a great time. The LaRowes scored a touchdown with their graciousness in opening their home to our rowdy bunch...so many thanks to Brooks and Ginger!

CSM Meeting

Jeremy and Sarah recapped what has been going on Wednesday nights at the RE:. We got to see some of the truly remarkable works that the Spirit is doing in our kids through some of the projects they have undertaken. They gave a look at what was in store for kids attending the upcoming Big Chill, as well. They also let us know what the small groups were doing, and further directions that CSM ministries will be taking. In addition, we were informed that a class has donated their classroom to CSM during the 10:30 hour. This means that ALL CSM classes on Sundays will be taking place at 10:30 starting three weeks from today!!

Trivia Night

...is fast approaching on March 6th. Details can be found in prior blog posts or posted on the newly revamped bulletin board in the classroom....it is also in the church program!

SPOTmail Update!!!!

The Big Game Party!!

This Sunday we'll gather at the LaRowes' house to enjoy fellowship, food, fun commercials and maybe even a good football game. Hopefully you've had a chance to sign up, but a party's no fun if you can't find the location.

The LaRowes' address is 1304 Park Meadow Drive in Fenton. You can MapQuest the address or use the handy map over to the right of this post!  (Click on it to make it bigger!)

Lesson Prep

Last week I spent a great deal of time giving an introduction to the section that makes up the teaching by use of parables. The most significant parable taught by Jesus in the section is the Parable of the Sower. You will recall that I think the parable would be better titled the Parable of the Soils. I'll give a "brief" review at the beginning of class, then we will look at the remainder of the parables in chapter 4.

Hope to see you Sunday.

Sunday Update!!!!

Lesson Recap

In today's lesson on the 4th chapter of Mark we learned why Jesus spoke in parables. and how to understand them.

We learned that we must conclude what the main element (or character) of each parable is and the major point being made.

Here is a brief outline of the parables unit.  All verses in Mark 4:
1-2 Narrative introduction
3-9 Seed parable
10-12 General statement about hiddenness
13-20 Interpretation of the first parable
21-25 Parables about hiddennness
26-32 More seed parables
33-34 Narrative conclusion

In the introduction we are informed that Jesus, due to the large crowds he drew, had to teach from a boat to those on shore.

Verses 3-9 The Seed parable

Is this story about the seed or the soil??  As we see in the explanation later in Mark, Jesus sows the Word everywhere...not just to "insiders"...and that fruit bearing is essential to mark the Kingdom of God.  In His explanation to teaching in parables in verses 10-12 Jesus quotes IS 6:9-10.  This gives us insight into the outsiders and the insiders.  To the insiders Jesus teaches in parables.  To the outsiders Jesus preaches in riddles.

February 7th!!!

In addition to being the Super Bowl Sunday...there is a lot of stuff happening!!!  First, right after class, will be the CSM parents meeting in the Rafters.  There is always some great information shared at these.  There are a number of afternoon activities at the church...and of course, the SPOT party at the LaRowes!!!

Trivia Night

It's coming up!!!  Saturday, March 6th!!!  See you program from services today, or read a few entries before this one!!!

Prayer Requests

-Dani aksed for praise for God, and to thank Him for looking after her son Zach at Cape.  She believes that God will provide for him a job or a way to finish another year there in God's timing.
-Pray for relief efforts in Haiti.  Also pray for the missionaries that have found a bit of legal trouble in trying to provide for children there.

SPOTmail Update!!!!

Early Bird Lesson Prep

This week we take a look at Mark, chapter 4. Mark contains two major parables given by Jesus; one of them is in this week's lesson. Speaking of parables, have you ever wondered what's the difference between a parable and a riddle? I have.

In closing, give thought to this -- which title do you think best applies to the first parable in chapter 4 -- The Parable of the Sower OR The Parable of the Soil? We'll knock it around Sunday.

Speaking of knocking around, I bet Brett Favre does not want to go anywhere where anything is going to be knocked around. (In case you didn't catch it, there was a little humor there -- very little.)

I could have too much fun with this, so I'll just say,
See you Sunday,
Don

Super Bowl Sunday Activities

A lot of activities are planned for Super Sunday, February 7.
• CSM Parent Meeting right after second hour in the Rafters. Sarah and Jeremy promise you'll be home in time for the kickoff, since it's at 5:18 p.m.
• CSM "Flag" (yea, right!) Football! This is for anyone in the church, not just students! Please bring your lunch and a first aid kit! This game should have everyone in stitches.
• SPOTclass Super Bowl Party. To avoid violating copyright laws and Baptist sensibilities, that's "The Big Game Class Social" at the LaRowes. Wear your team colors (if you have any). We'll have more details and directions in class on Sunday.
Be sure to sign up this Sunday (or send your plans to the class blog) so we know who's bringing what. There will be plenty to eat and drink (weight watchers take the day off). Yes, there will be ROOT BEER. (We want to include root beer in every SPOTmail, as it apparently links our blog to international search engines.)

Snacks Makers

January 31 -- Jeanette Stubbs
February 7 -- Janice Meinhardt

Prayer Requests

• Dani Cotter is thankful for God's response to her silent prayer request about her brother-in-law, Jack!
• Jeff Bradshaw's friend and co-worker Ken was diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer. Please pray for him as he decides on the appropriate course of treatment.
• Kevin Hurt's doctors as they determine how to proceed on his neck and back pain, and the stroke issue. (Kevin made another brief visit to the hospital this week for stroke symptoms.)
• Prayers for Rich Conrad, who leaves on a four-month assignment abroad.
For more SPOTnews and late-breaking prayer requests, be sure to check the SPOTblog at www.spotsspot.blogspot.com

Camping & Canoes

SPOTclass is having its second annual camping trip on June 11-13. This year, the trip will be at Bennett Springs State Park with camping and accommodations at Lottie’s Rustic Retreat (about 4 miles from the park entrance).

Rates are as follows:
Cabin lodging: $12.50 per person per night
Tents: $2.50 per person per night
Electric hook-up for campers (only one): $5 per night in addition to the tent per-person fee.

We will work out meal details as the date gets closer.

In order to get group rates, we will need a small deposit for both camping and canoeing. Next week, we will send around a sign-up sheet so that we know how many will be attending (and canoeing!). This will give us the ability to negotiate canoe rates!

CSM Trivia Night

It's time again to put on your thinking caps and sign up for Concord's CSM missions benefit Trivia Night on Saturday, March 6. Join your SPOT friends as we strive to prove we are smarter than the average fifth grader! We have one SPOT table already signed up, so get your team together challenge for the top SPOT!

If you can’t attend, but would like to donate to the silent auction, CSM will gladly accept your items! Last year, the SPOTclass collected gift basket donations. Annually, CSM's trivia event generates more than $5,000 for Concord Student Ministries' summer mission activities.

- Middle School students will work in the St. Louis inner city
- High School students travel to South Dakota to work with Native Americans on their reservation
- College students will be working in Puerto Rico

You can sign up this Sunday at the CSM booth in the Atrium or contact Patti Endejan for tables or Sherry Barton with your silent auction donations.

Bulletin Board

We have updated the SPOTclass bulletin board in the classroom. (It had been neglected a bit, but is now up to date, sort-of!) Feel free to post at will!

Sunday Update!!!!

Lesson Recap

Don challenged me to come up with a nice lesson recap after Sunday's heavy lesson in Mark, so here it is:

Yup...a rattlesnake!!!

All kidding aside...today's lesson was designed to help us see family as Jesus did.

We noticed a difference in the crowds in Mark 3:7-12.  The sick came from EVERYWHERE, and were forcing their way to Jesus to touch him for healing, rather than being brought to them.  We contrast this to the crowds that John the Baptist saw.

Jesus appointed the 12 in Mark 3: 13-19.  He had called them all earlier, but this was the actual appointment of the Apostles.

In a sandwiched message (common for Mark), Jesus dealt with both his family's concerns, and the claims of the Pharisees that Christ was using Beelzebub to cast out demons.  Jesus used an example to show that wasn't the case, and in fact it could not be, and did so with his message of His redeeming us. He also stated that blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is the one unpardonable sin.

We also learned the importance of God's family and that they may not be our biological family.

Hope this covered it, Don!!!

Trivia Night

See the post right before this one!!!

Blog Stuff

Next week during class we will have a sheet going around to get a list of birthdays and anniversaries.  That way we can recognize class members here on the blog.  If you aren't in class you can email the info to me here at spotspot@gmx.com!  We also encourage folks to email us with ANY announcements they want on the blog...at all!  This could include other church activities not related to class, etc.

Canoe Sign Up

A preliminary sign up sheet went around for anyone to show their possible desire to canoe on the class camping trip in June.  We are using this info to negotiate decent rates!  Again, if you were not in class you can email your desire to spotspot@gmx.com.

Bulletin Board

We have updated the class bulletin board in the classroom.  It had been neglected a bit, but is now up to date (sort-of!).  Feel free to post at will!

Super Bowl Party

Due to a logistical error on the part of yours truly, the super bowl party sign up sheet was misplaced.  It has been found!!!  It will be in the folder next week for any last minute sign ups. The party is on Feb. 7th at the LaRowe's, and you need to bring an appetizer!

CSM Parents Meeting

The quarterly CSM parents meeting will be held in the Rafters right after class on Feb. 7th!  This will be followed by touch football on the grounds, and then the chili cook off later.....or the SPOT Party mentioned above!!

Prayer Requests

- Dani asked for a prayer of thanks for God's response to her silent prayer request for her brother-in-law, Jack!
- Jeff Bradshaw's friend and co-worker Ken was diagnosed with early stage prostrate cancer.  Please pray for him as he decides what treatment option to choose.

TRIVIA NIGHT!!

Saturday, March 06, 2010

It's that time again...put on your thinking caps and come on out to Concord Church as we incorrectly answer many questions proving that we are indeed not smarter than a 5th grader. If you can’t attend, but would like to donate for the silent auction, we’ll gladly accept donations! This event is to raise money for mission trips that Concord Student Ministries will be going on in the summer:

Middle School: 6/7-9; STL
High School: 6/27-7/3; South Dakota
College: Date TBA; Puerto Rico

Please reserve your seat/table at the church office or by contacting Patti Endejan, 314.313.1835 for tables, and Sherry Barton, 314.892.2323 for silent auction donations

SPOTmail Update!!!!

Marking The SPOT

In retrospect, I should have called last week's lesson "Great Expectations". I often reflect on God's love, his mercy and grace. I, too, often need to rely upon his forgiveness. But his expectations for me are something I did not give much thought to until preparing for last week. Great Expectations -- Lord, help me to live up to them.

As for this Sunday; we are introduced to an unique writing style Mark uses. Here's a clue -- what do you have when you put something between two pieces of bread? And secondly, Mark forces us to look at the topic of family with a different perspective. In preparation -- you will want to read chapter 3, starting with verse 7.

In closing, I must say, "Sorry, Brooks about your football Cardinals and Rusty for the Cowboys." Who now shall we cheer for? If you remind me, I'll tell you about a man from Louisiana who died and went to hell. You might get a chuckle out of the rest of the story.

C U Sunday,
Don

Super Bowl Sunday Activities

A lot of activities are planned for Super Sunday, February 7, not the least of which is a CSM Parent Meeting right after second hour in the Rafters. Sarah and Jeremy promise you'll home in time for the kickoff, since it's at 5:18 p.m.

CSM "Flag" (yea, right!) Football! This is for anyone in the church, not just students! Please bring your lunch, not your years of pent-up frustrations after being cut from the high school football team.

And you won't want to be late for that first play of the real Super Bowl as SPOTclass members (and associates) gather at the LaRowes to watch the game and root for whoever is left. We'll just hope for a good game and an uneventful halftime show with no dysfunctional costumes. More details and maps will be coming soon!

Be sure to sign up this Sunday (or send your plans to the class blog) so we know who's bringing what. There will be plenty to eat and drink (weight watchers take the day off) and I suspect we may see a super-sized bottle of root beer.

CSM Update

Currently on Wednesday nights, students are learning about what worship truly is.
(Romans 12:1-2).
In Sunday morning Bible study:

Sunday Update!!!!

Lesson Recap

Today we read more in Mark as part of Don's "Marks of Discipleship" series.  Today's lesson asked what Jesus' call means to me, and was designed to help us identify and accept His expectations of how to live as believers.

We read Mark 2:1-12 where Jesus heals a paralytic.
We read Mark 2: 13-17 when Jesus called Levi (Matthew).
We read Mark 2: 18-22 where Jesus was questioned about fasting.
We finished up reading about the Lord of the Sabbath in Mark 2:23-3:6.

1) When we accept the call of Jesus, He then wants us to provide opportunities for other unbelievers to hear and respond to his call.
2)  When we accept the call of Jesus, we then have reason to live with a new attitude that is characterized by joy!
3)  When we accept the call of Jesus, we then will give attention to doing good, including meeting peoples needs.

Super Bowl Party

The Super Bowl Party is going to be held at the LaRowe's home on February 7th. We passed the sign-up sheet around today, and will do so next week...so there is still time to sign up!  You can also email your RSVP to spotspot@gmx.com, along with the appetizer you will bring!!

SPOTmail Update!!!!

SPOTlunch at Breadco

Just a reminder that this Sunday is SPOTlunch at the St. Louis Bread Co. restaurant at Tesson Ferry and Kennerly roads (across from St. Anthony's Hospital). We'll try to score one of the bigger tables so adults can sit together and we also hope to have a separate kids table.

SUPER Bowl SPOTparty

Kurt Warner tries to takes his Arizona (it still doesn't sound right) Cardinals to the next round of the playoffs Saturday. We're all (well, except some unnamed Cowboy fans) hoping to watch Kurt at the SPOTclass Super Bowl party February 7 at the LaRowes.

The festivities begin about 5 p.m. just in time for the opening kickoff. We're looking forward to some really awesome (teenager speak) appetizers to enjoy while Don Robbins and the rest of the class watch the game.

Be sure to sign up and let us know you're coming (assuming we remember to put a sign-up sheet in the SPOTfolder).

Prayer Request

Please keep Kevin's nephew Jordan in your prayers. He's in the hospital with an infected cat bite. He was rolling over in bed, onto the cat, and it bit him. His finger and hand are very swollen and infected. He's on IV antibiotics, and a plastic surgeon is going to see him today and decide if he needs surgery to help drain the infection.

Sunday Update!!!!

Lesson Summary

Who knew so much about the writer of the book of Mark, John Mark?

In the first chapter of Mark, we learned about the ways that he introduced us to Jesus -- God's Christ.
• First he showed us Jesus' power over evil through his 40 days in the wilderness.
• When he cast out the demons in a possessed man, we learned that even Satan accepted him as the Son of God.
• Jesus praying demonstrates that while he is fully God, he is also fully man and needs to communicate to the Father through prayer, just as we do.
• Jesus tells us in verse 39 that he came to preach, but it was his miracles the people wanted to see when Jesus arrived in their towns.
• Mark concludes that we all need Jesus for one of four reasons:
     o Salvation
o His leadership in our lives
o Freedom from Satan's power, or to
o Enable us to serve others

Prayer Requests

• Wisdom for the doctors in diagnosing Kevin Hurt's illness and wisdom for Kevin and Susan as they try to sort out the sometimes conflicting conclusions the doctors share with them.
• Keith Garner, distantly related to class member Mike Smith, who survived two gunshot wounds in the ABB shooting last week.
• Andrew Conrad is seeking explanation for recent asthma attacks at his new home in Orlando.
• Help for all those seeking work at this time
o Zach Hazelhorst (Dani Cotter's son) looking for a job at school that works with his classes

Big Chill Early Bird Deadline.

This Sunday, January 17, is the Early Bird deadline for your teenager's $50 deposit for Big Chill. Early registration will save your family $15 of the overall cost. Big Chill is scheduled for February 19-21 at Lake Williamson Christian Center in Carlinville, IL. For more information, contact Jeremy Preomsey at (314) 843-3500 or jeremy@concordlife.com.

SPOTlunch

Next week (January 17) at St. Louis Bread Co. across from St. Anthony's Hospital. Don't miss it!

Super Bowl Party

Was it divine intervention or is Kurt Warner just that good? Either way, the Arizona Cardinals edged one step closer to the Super Bowl and a chance for us to cheer on our old friend at the SPOT Super Bowl Party Feb. 7 at the LaRowes. (So as to avoid NFL copyright infringement, that's the "SPOT Big Game Party.")

The party's on, even if the Cardinals don't make it -- kickoff is 5:18 p.m., so plan on arriving about 5 p.m. and bring your favorite appetizers. It will be several hours of football, fun and, of course, plenty of food.

We WILL have a sign-up sheet next week, so we don't end up with five bowls of French onion dip.

Watch for SPOTmail later is week, or check out the SPOTblog, www.thespotsspot.blogspot.com.

Speaking of sign ups....I know that this is six months off, but we need to start getting an idea of who will be joining us on the class camping trip on June 11-13th.  We are going to use the info to try and negotiate some really good rates on stuff.  Right now, we are looking at mainly the canoes.  I will have some info sheets for all to take next week, but if in the next couple of weeks I can get an idea of who wants to go on the float trip on the Niangua, it sure would be helpful!  Again, I know this is early...but better to be prepared!!!

CSM Update!!!

As mentioned during class today, we will be coordinating a bit more on events, bible studies, and perhaps just plain 'ole communication with CSM. Please note the new link to the CSM website of to the left here!!!

SPOTmail Update!!!!

Lesson Prep

As we start a new year, we also begin a new study series. We will look at the book of Mark for the next few months. I am calling the study "Marks of Discipleship."

Before we get hot and heavy into Mark's message, we first need to answer some questions. For example:
• Who is Mark?
• When did he write his letter and who was his target?
• What was his motivation for writing?
We'll answer these questions, plus others, so come with your questions and we'll address them also.

In an unrelated matter -- I want to thank each of you for the words of encouragement you penned in the Christmas card and the generous gift.

However, I want you to know that my reward is twofold:
• The relationship I enjoy with each of you and
• The privilege you give me to teach God's Word.
As we contemplate new year's resolutions, let's consider the following -- becoming more Christ-like through the study of His Word and application of its truths in our daily lives. I'll help you if you will help me!

Enjoy ringing in 2010 and I'll see you Sunday!

Super Bowl Party

Mark your calendars for a class Super Bowl Party at the LaRowes on February 7. Watch for more details in the weeks ahead. In the meantime, let's root for Kurt Warner's return to the classic -- this time to win it again and regain center stage for his witness to Christ.

Prayer List
• Successful gall bladder surgery for Janice Meinhart's daughter Claudia just days before Christmas.
• LaRowes are home safely from a 3-day visit to Chicago where they returned their daughter Sally to school and helped her celebrate her 21st birthday.
